JEDI ACTION LAB: PART 2 OF 4
An interactive forum that allows you to develop or enhance one area of your Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging efforts.
At the JEDI Action Lab we will be providing the structure, resources, and accountability so you can roll up your sleeves and take action on your JEDI efforts. Following a “design studio” model, firms are encouraged to send teams of 2-3 people to identify, develop and start implementing a JEDI project at their firm, in line with the requirements of the Equity Council Design Industry Pledge.
- Following a “design studio” model, organizations are encouraged to send teams of 2-3 people to develop and work on a JEDI project
- Your team will need to select one JEDI project to work on – it can be an initiative in progress or something new
- You’ll present your progress and get feedback from your peers as well as our experienced facilitators from Co-Creating Inclusion (CCI)
This is not a passive workshop where you will listen and take notes. These are active sessions where attendees will be working on their projects during and between meetings.
This will be a supportive space where you can learn by presenting ideas, getting feedback, testing things out, reflecting and iterating.
JEDI Action Lab Schedule:
We will be hosting four in person sessions (attendance for all sessions recommended):
- February 8th Charrette: Select and develop a project
- February 15th Working Session: Report on progress and next steps
- March 8th and 29th Presentations: Team presentations and feedback
JEDI Action Lab Day-Of Schedule:
- 5:30-6PM: Introductions / Reflections
- 6 -7:30PM: Session begins, Working / feedback
- 7:30PM: Conclusion / Next steps
The following are suggested initiatives from the Equity Council Design Industry Pledge that organizations can select as a project:
- JEDI strategic action plan
- Equitable practices and inclusive languages within the employee manual
- Expectations for meeting conduct
- Examining racial and power dynamics within the workplace and client facing settings
- Clear policy and process for reporting discrimination in the workplace
- Salary equity review
- Equitable professional development and mentorship opportunities
- Employee inclusion and safety survey
- Equitable internship program
- JEDI committee
- Working with community groups or providing pro-bono services to organizations with a social justice mission
- Tracking racial diversity in recruitment, hiring, retention, advancement and partners
- Internal and external communications on equity
- Incorporating JEDI into design
Participants will also gain access to:
- Last year’s recorded series of workshops
- Resource guide for each of the requirements of the pledge assessment

Alethea Cheng Fitzpatrick, AIA, Principal and Founder of Co-Creating Inclusion is in her element when she has the opportunity to impact all aspects of an organization through an integrated approach that leverages her ability to deal with ambiguity while driving the work forward. A creative at heart, she loves understanding “existing conditions” and working with staff from across an organization to imagine and realize transformational change. Starting out her career as an architect and designer with a BArch from Pratt Institute, Alethea spent almost 20 years managing workplace strategy and corporate headquarters projects for major global brands while working for firms such as STUDIOS Architecture, Skolnick Architecture, and Gensler. She holds a Diversity and Inclusion Certificate from Cornell University and is an MBTI Certified Practitioner and certified leadership coach. Born and brought up in the UK, Alethea lives in Brooklyn with her husband and her 9- and 12-year-old boys.
Malaika Aaron-Bishop, Director of Client Services, is an experienced and thoughtful strategist and facilitator. She creates space for learning, while improving levels of engagement and connection between people on teams, both large and small. Malaika’s work is informed by her adaptability, insight, keen observation, humor, and an openness for the idiosyncrasies of our shared humanity. While the focus of her work changes with the needs of each organization, several factors are critical to her approach: a racial justice lens, an understanding of power and power differentials, and the ability to engage difficult conversations across lines of difference. Born in Guyana before coming to the US as a child, Malaika has a background in broadcast television, anthropology and higher education. She lives in Brooklyn where she is also a community organizer concerned with racial justice, energy justice, women’s health & reproductive rights, health justice, and criminal justice. She is also committed to working with educators, change-makers, and advocates to build the knowledge, agency, capacity, and empathy that ultimately fuel the work of manifesting justice
