A fun fact about yourself? 

I love to travel and explore new places, and I always try to pick up a sticker or a magnet from everywhere I go. 

What made you want to join IIDA NY? 

I was an active member of the student chapter of IIDA when I was in college at the University of Kentucky, so I knew wherever I landed, I would want to join my local chapter. I really enjoyed the new relationships and learning opportunities IIDA fostered.

What position do you hold within IIDA NY, if any? What is the most rewarding aspect of this role? 

I am the Co-Director of the Rochester City Center. The most rewarding part of this role has been the connections I have been able to make with people in the local design community.

How has IIDA NY shaped your professional career?

IIDA NY has helped to provide me with opportunities to develop many skills, including, but not limited to, leadership skills. It has given me the opportunity to dive into the ins and outs of bringing together a great team of people and working to provide them with the resources they need to be successful. These same skills have been helpful in my growth as a professional in the field.

How has your role in IIDA NY evolved during your time as a member?

I started out by just attending a few events, then started to attend city center board meetings just to help provide input and plan events, then I took on the role of Communications Chair for a few years, and that led me to my current role of Co-Director of the City Center.

What goals do you hope to achieve in your current position?

I will be transitioning into a past director role in 2024 and transferring my role to Erika Reed. I hope that in this next role, I will be able to help provide the new Co-Directors with the information and support they need to be successful. Also, to continue sitting on the board and finding ways to support our chapter’s goals for building a strong and supportive design community that values and educates others about the interior design profession.

Do you have any favorite events or memories so far from your time in IIDA NY? 

I really enjoy our High School Exploring program, which is a program that educates local students on what the interior design profession is and helps them to pursue it as a career if they have an interest in it. I also love our Product Runway Event at Fashion Week of Rochester. It is such a fun event where local design firms get to create beautiful clothing creations out of finishes and building materials. It is great to see how creative our community is.

What would you say is the biggest benefit of joining IIDA NY?

To me, the biggest benefit of joining IIDA NY is the connections to other professionals in the field. 

What would you tell someone who was considering becoming a member of IIDA NY?

I would say that you won’t regret joining, and it is what you make it. There are so many different ways to get involved and things you can be a part of, whether it’s advocacy for our profession, attending networking events with other design professionals, or mentoring. There is no limit to what you can do, and you have a community of people with similar interests to connect with.

A fun fact about yourself? I have a pup that loves to go on hikes and runs with me!

What made you want to join IIDA NY? When I joined as a student, my goal was to meet local professionals and learn more about the design industry. After graduation, I joined to not only enjoy the networking aspect but the community of designers that are involved in IIDA NY.

What position do you hold within IIDA NY, if any? What is the most rewarding aspect of this role?

I am the Communications & Social Media Chair of the Buffalo City Center. This role is rewarding because I have the opportunity to be involved with every event our City Center holds and get to connect and collaborate with other City Center’s Communications chairs throughout New York state.

How has IIDA NY shaped your professional career?

Being involved in the IIDA NY has shaped my career in many ways. The networking advantages that being on the board and attending events provide are very valuable, especially to a recent graduate like myself.

How has your role in IIDA NY evolved during your time as a member?

I started as the Student Chair on the Buffalo City Center Board. After graduation, I moved into the role of Communications & Social Media Chair, and now I’m more involved in the planning and organizing of City Center events.

What goals do you hope to achieve in your current position?

My goals for my current position are to help advertise and promote our events, be a resource for students, and advocate for the interior design profession.

Do you have any favorite events or memories so far from your time in IIDA NY?

IIDA NY’s Buffalo City Center hosts BuffCon every year. It is a great event to not only see new materials and furniture, but to catch up with designers and all the reps. It’s an event we look forward to each year!

What would you say is the biggest benefit of joining IIDA NY?

The biggest benefit is being a part of a supportive community while staying up to date on events across New York.

What would you tell someone who was considering becoming a member of IIDA NY?

It is a great organization to be a part of! There are so many opportunities: access to events, staying current on what’s happening locally and across New York in the industry, and involvement through event committees or board positions!

A fun fact about yourself? 

After buying our house in 2019, I started to collect houseplants. I now have over 100! 

What made you want to join IIDA NY? 

I wanted to join IIDA NY to expand my network and gain mentorship from other designers in my community. 

What position do you hold within IIDA NY, if any? What is the most rewarding aspect of this role? 

I am currently the Director of IIDA NY’s Albany City Center. Seeing the other board members grow professionally and personally has been so rewarding. Many members have earned promotions, new jobs, or new roles, and I believe their experience with IIDA NY helped them achieve those successes. 

How has IIDA NY shaped your professional career? 

Being a member of IIDA NY has opened so many doors. Through this time, I have gained the confidence to become an advocate for my team and my profession. More than ever, I recognize the value that interior designers bring to a project and that they always should have a seat at the table. 

How has your role in IIDA NY evolved during your time as a member? 

I was invited to join the board as the Professional Development Chair shortly after passing my NCIDQ. I supported other members on their path to certification through information and study sessions. I served as the Advocacy Chair for one year before starting my term as director. I believe that both roles gave me an understanding of our profession’s and community’s needs to best serve as director.  

What goals do you hope to achieve in your current position? 

Although I am nearing the end of my term, my hopes for the next few months are to continue laying the groundwork as a strong City Center in Albany that will majorly impact future interior design legislation. Advocacy efforts are in full swing, and being up-to-date and involved is more important than ever.

Do you have any favorite events or memories so far from your time in IIDA NY? 

My favorite event is, by far, Flannel Fest. I was a member of the founding committee that started the event in 2018 and have seen it evolve into our most popular event. This year, we celebrated our 5th Annual Flannel Fest, and I’m always in awe of the electricity that can be felt by gathering with nearly the entire Albany design community. 

What would you say is the biggest benefit of joining IIDA NY? 

The biggest benefit of joining IIDA NY is gaining a network of like-minded individuals who grow beyond colleagues and into friends! I have had an opportunity to meet and work with people across the state, some who may work for competing firms. The beauty of this organization is that we are all working toward one goal: to strengthen the profession of interior design. 

What would you tell someone who was considering becoming a member of IIDA NY? 

Don’t wait! You never know who you will meet or what you might learn that will change the trajectory of your career! 

A fun fact about yourself?

The first career that I wanted with a creative focus was to work for the Art Theft Bureau of the FBI.

What made you want to join IIDA NY?

I’ve been interested in joining IIDA since I was a student, and I’ve been a member of IIDA NY since I moved to New York after school. This was mostly motivated by education and community. While I had always been curious about joining in general, I was eager to learn more about the industry that they didn’t teach you in school and to get to know more of the local design community.

How has your role in IIDA NY evolved during your time as a member?

Evolution is rarely linear. When I first joined as a committee member, I never would have guessed that I would become a board member. But, the evolution within IIDA adapts as we do, evolving with what inspires us. That growth and evolution is very meaningful. 

What goals do you hope to achieve in your current position?

I’d like to see IIDA NY’s efforts within wellness evolve on all fronts, to not only evolve the impact that we can have on built environments but to investigate how we can better sustain ourselves and our communities. There’s a unique opportunity here, at this point in history. I’d love to see what seeds we can plant for the future that engage education, communication, and inclusivity more holistically.

Do you have any favorite events or memories so far from your time in IIDA NY?

Favorite events, all of them, because you can always learn something. Favorite memories…that’s tough. If I could rewind time, I wish I could walk into my first Color Invasion or the Annual Meeting for the first time again.

What would you say is the biggest benefit of joining IIDA NY?

The community, hands down. Design, for me, has always been deeply rooted in communication. There are so many outstanding minds in our industry and people that are so beautiful because of their differences. That is so special because we can learn so much from one another and support each other in ways we never expected. It’s phenomenal.

 How has IIDA NY shaped your professional career?

IIDA NY has given me the opportunity to learn and refine skills that I don’t always use on a daily basis or within my job role. It’s allowed me to see through a different lens and approach obstacles from a wider range of viewpoints. 

A fun fact about yourself?

In my free time, I enjoy interval training, which includes several exercises including skipping rope to Hip Hop and other dance music.

What made you want to join IIDA NY?

The two factors that motivated me to join IIDA NY were education and community. By joining, I

was able to take part in discussions that educated me on design initiatives and gave me a broader view of the industry. I was also excited for the opportunity to support the community and give back because of the support WB Wood and I were receiving from the organization. I had a two-fold goal. The first was being able to educate myself as to what initiatives designers were looking to achieve. The second was to support the community by volunteering and giving back based on the support WB Wood and myself were receiving from the designers.

What position do you hold within IIDA NY, if any? What is the most rewarding aspect of this role?

For the past seven years, I have been a volunteer on the Leaders Breakfast Committee. One of

the rewarding aspects is working closely with the members of the committee and establishing deeper relationships between one another. Another rewarding aspect is planning the breakfast, which includes selecting a guest speaker, an NYC Chapter honoree, reaching out for sponsorships and of course planning the catering. There is a great sense of accomplishment when the committee witnesses the success of the event, especially when we have such a huge turnout.

 How has IIDA NY shaped your professional career?

My time in IIDA NY continually enhances my professional career. I am able to educate myself, advancing my knowledge of the A&D industry and my experiences add to my expertise as a furniture service provider. It has shaped my career in assisting with my personal goal of educating myself to advance my knowledge of the A&D community and ultimately offering my expertise as a furniture service provider.

 How has your role in IIDA NY evolved during your time as a member?

By embracing IIDA NY and all it has to offer, I have put myself out there and been rewarded with invaluable connections within the industry. I believe it’s up to the individual member to participate in the

organization by joining committees and attending networking events to become well known. I have embraced what IIDA has to offer and have valued all the connections I have made.

 What goals do you hope to achieve in your current position?

As a volunteer for the Leaders’ Breakfast Committee, I hope to continue my contributions there, and maintain these close relationships as we plan this tremendous event. To continue to contribute to the committee and maintain close relationships.

 Do you have any favorite events or memories so far from your time in IIDA NY?

The first time I attended the Hall of Fame Dinner sticks out to me. It was the first event at which I truly understood the value and depth of IIDA NY and the experiences it offered to its members. I will never forget the first time I attended the Hall of Fame Dinner. I believe it was at that point I truly understood the value and depth of what IIDA had to offer.

 What would you say is the biggest benefit of joining IIDA NY?

I cannot say it enough: relationships, relationships, relationships! Establishing these connections with other industry professionals has been such a valuable experience, and I don’t believe I could have formed so many close bonds without IIDA NY. Establishing relationships… relationships, relationships!!! I cannot say it enough!

 What would you tell someone who was considering becoming a member of IIDA NY?

Join a committee and volunteer! Doing so helped me optimize the value of being an IIDA NY member, and these connections are the very thing that boosts every professional and keeps organizations strong. Join a committee and volunteer. This is where the value of IIDA can be maximized.

What made you want to join IIDA NY? 

Having just completed my BFA in interior design at Kean University, and having just started my first design job at CFI, I thought it would be opportunity to network, and have creative outlets beyond the scope of my work.

What position do you hold within IIDA NY, if any? What is the most rewarding aspect of this role? 

 I am a first time volunteer on the DEX NYC committee this year. The most rewarding aspect of this role, is getting to be part of the team bringing this IIDA NY signature event back in person, for the first time since 2019.

How has IIDA NY shaped your professional career?

It’s too early to say how IIDA NY has shaped my career, as I’ve only been involved for less than a year. But through the people I have met, and gotten to work with, I can see that it has the potential to help me grow as a professional.

What goals do you hope to achieve in your current position?

To make the 2023 DEX NYC Event the best it’s ever been, as well as meet more interesting and unique people.

Do you have any favorite events or memories so far from your time in IIDA NY? 

I really enjoyed the Pioneering Design event in March, with The Hip Hop Architect Michael Ford. His lecture opened my eyes to future possibilities within our industry and beyond

What would you say is the biggest benefit of joining IIDA NY?

The biggest benefit of joining IIDA NY has been the opportunity to create new connections, and strength existing ones, within the industry. 

What would you tell someone who was considering becoming a member of IIDA NY?

Definitely join and then jump in and get involved. There’s so much to be gained and so many talented people to meet and you can choose your level of participation depending on your interests and time availability.

A fun fact about yourself?

I love cooking, almost every weekend my roommate and I pick a new recipe to prepare together, though we don’t always get great results.

What made you want to join IIDA NY?

I started to attend IIDA events when I was a student at Pratt. IIDA is the bridge to connect my school life with the real design world, which gives me great opportunities to get connection with interior design professionals and design industry.

What position do you hold within IIDA NY, if any? What the most rewarding aspect of this role?

I am helping with IIDA Pioneering Design Series currently. This role gives me amazing chance to talk to the most talented designers in NYC directly. It is nice to work with them and learn their thoughts, studies, and design stories behinds their works.

How has IIDA NY shaped your professional career?

IIDA mentorship program helps me finding my first internship after school, and it turns to be my first full-time job luckily!

How has your role in IIDA NY evolved during your time as a member?

In the past I only joined IIDA NY’s events as an attendee, but this year I start to get behind the scenes and help arranging events with Pioneering Design Committee. It’s my first experience to help arranging big public event like this. There are lots of interesting stories and fun moments behind the scenes.

What goals do you hope to achieve in your current position?

I would like to get exposure to different design fields as much as possible. Besides workplace and healthcare that I currently work on, I also would like to get exposure to residential, hospitality, retail or

cultural design. There are so many interesting things and topics to explore in the design world.

Do you have any favorite events or memories so far from your time in IIDA NY?

It must be 2022 Color invasion. The topic and theme are amazing. It is so fun to dress up together with

HDR colleagues, everyone is so creative about make-up and dressing.

What would you say is the biggest benefit of joining IIDA NY?

The biggest benefit for me is the chance to get connection with people and work with talents from different design fields.

What would you tell someone who was considering becoming a member of IIDA NY?

Don’t hesitate to join IIDA NY, let’s attend next IIDA event together.

A fun fact about yourself?

My dream career was to be a professional ballet dancer. I danced pre-professionally and was originally a dance major in college. It’s part of the reason why I fell in love with NYC and knew that I wanted to live here.

What made you want to join IIDA NY?

I was involved in interior design organizations prior to moving to NY and knew that I wanted to establish the same sense of community for myself up here. I found myself attending more and more IIDA NY events and wanted to become part of the chapter.

What position do you hold within IIDA NY, if any? What is the most rewarding aspect of this role?

I’m the Vice President of Student Development along with Robin Reigi. I find it incredibly rewarding to serve the students within IIDA NY and love seeing the exciting perspectives that our next generation is bringing to the table.

How has IIDA NY shaped your professional career?

I’ve been involved in IIDA NY for the better part of my career now. Through IIDA NY, I feel that I’ve been able to establish myself in our design community. It has provided me an avenue to not only mentor but to have mentorship myself. It’s also provided exposure to experiences beyond my job.

How has your role in IIDA NY evolved during your time as a member?

I started as a member and soon after joining, a coworker asked me to participate in the Professional Development committee. From there, I transitioned to the Healthcare Forum, then to a co-chair of Design Camp and now VP of Student Development. I absolutely love it!

What goals do you hope to achieve in your current position?

Robin and I aim to elevate and connect students within the chapter. We work on new ways that students can be further integrated into various committees and events. We strive to celebrate them. We’re also working on growing our student members and their overall active involvement in the chapter.

Do you have any favorite events or memories so far from your time in IIDA NY?

Gosh, I don’t think I can pick just one. I absolutely treasure all the memories from our Design Camp events. Seeing the young designers explore and create brings me so much joy.

What would you say is the biggest benefit of joining IIDA NY?

The connections and friendships that come out of being part of the chapter. I love being able to go to different events, even in different cities, and see someone I know through IIDA NY.

What would you tell someone who was considering becoming a member of IIDA NY?

If you are looking to establish your design community, IIDA NY is for you. I have felt incredibly supported by IIDA NY throughout my various stages in my career and even now as I continue to grow. Whether it is mentorship, CEUs, studying for exams, or simply the desire to network, I have always been able to find the support that I needed through the chapter and its people.

A fun fact about yourself?
I was in the Opening Ceremonies of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta as a member of the Ohio State University Cheerleading squad.

What made you want to join IIDA NY?
I initially joined to gain a greater connection with our community. Now my membership with IIDA NY is about giving back and being of service. Leaders in the field have such an incredible opportunity to make a difference, and that difference has many faces; I want to be a part of the great work that is being done by this important organization. From initially joining the Healthcare Committee — in which I am still actively involved — to the Sustainable Quilt Committee, raising money for Free Arts NYC, a group that empowers youth from underserved communities through art and mentoring programs — and most recently to Equity Council, moving our industry in a direction of greater inclusion, equity, and access.

What position do you hold within IIDA NY, if any? What is the most rewarding aspect of this role?
I am a proud member of the Healthcare committee and Equity Council. We, as thoughtful creatives, are often looking for inspiration; the work in both committees creates a unique lens on what will inspire. You can see this inspiration in the new conversations about space, the way we examine the use of and access to those spaces. We have begun building more dynamic environments as a result of the work that we have done in both of these forward-thinking committees, giving us an opportunity to open the eyes of those who are working on and in the built environment.

How has IIDA NY shaped your professional career?
From the moment that I became involved in the organization, I became a part of a community whose primary mission was to lift each other up through design. I have applied that spirit and that idea to the work that I do. It has allowed me to build strong, deep, and long-lasting relationships that have helped me to grow on many levels and in directions that I had not imagined. For example, being able to articulate equity goals and have challenging (productively challenging) conversations that will impact the spaces we create — and the sense of belongingness that goes along with that space – in ways that that will ultimately have an impact on business from dynamic and inclusive healthcare settings to accessible spaces that are welcoming to everyone.

How has your role in IIDA NY evolved during your time as a member?
In the years that I have been in IIDA NY, I have had the honor of being a part of three impactful committees. I have grown from committee member in attendance to an active thought leader in areas that are personal and professional passions for me. I am grateful for this evolution from more passive to active roles in the organization. I do not want to watch my passions play out in front of me, I want to actively pursue them – IIDA NY has been the perfect vehicle for pursuing my passions. I am grateful for the privilege to serve in this organization.

What goals do you hope to achieve in your current position?
Equity Council and the Healthcare Committee are two important committees in their own right, but for me they both have a similar goal – though through different lenses — that I want to amplify: being courageous and having greater empathy. Having these traits makes a difference in shifting behaviors. These are important components to being an agent of change in our community and beyond.

Do you have any favorite events or memories so far from your time in IIDA NY?
Let me start by saying that the events that the committees I am on are my passions. They do important work; I am grateful to be a part of that work. In Equity Council, we offer a powerful series of lunchtime conversations; this season’s topics center around cultural humility and belonging. We also conduct a JEDI Action Lab Series that I encourage all to consider joining. The Lab series is an interactive forum that allows you to develop or enhance one area of your Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging efforts. The Healthcare Committee has an important annual panel discussion that helps to move the needle in healthcare design. That said, the event that I have the greatest sentimental attachment to is Color Invasion. It was the first industry event that my partner, Colin Chellman, PHD, and I attended together. We love costume parties, meeting new people, and catching up with friends and colleagues – all part of building and sustaining a community. We get very inspired by the event and always celebrate the spirit of every theme.

What would you say is the biggest benefit of joining IIDA NY?
Community. I love that about this organization. It is powerful and warms my heart and excites me about the work I/we do.

What would you tell someone who was considering becoming a member of IIDA NY?
Do it! Get involved. Beyond all the fun, friendships, and fabulous events, IIDA NY is a wonderful organization that is doing great things. It is an incredible collective that works to lift everyone up to be their best among the best. When it is all said and done, we are trying to have a positive impact and I encourage all who are in this community to join the joy ride.

Where were you born, where do you currently reside, where did you graduate?

I was born in Sancti-Spiritus, Cuba, and I currently reside in New York. I have an
undergraduate degree in architecture from The Ohio State University and a
graduate degree in architecture from University of Illinois Chicago.

What do you enjoy the most about working closely with the interior design community?

I’m inspired by the pace of advancement we are making as an industry around
environmental and social problems. There’s a lot of work ahead of us, but I’m
optimistic when I see the energy and contributions we bring as an industry and as
professionals to make our communities and our planet better. Our clients count
on us to help them deliver purpose-driven places and spaces that align with their
own mission and vision, and I’m proud to work at a company like Gensler that is
committed to leading the industry toward a net zero future by rethinking the way
we specify materials and design the built environment.

Can you share a success story in which you collaborated with a designer to solve a problem or enhance their design?

I have had the good fortune to work closely with incredible firms and incredible
designers. They were all great collaborators with no egos or hidden agendas.
The end result was amazing every time, and our personal and professional
relationship got stronger as we both learned a lot in the process.

Where’s your favorite place for inspiration in New York?

I love NYC’s amazing “high-low” range, and its ability to democratize everything.
You can go to Carnegie Hall to hear amazing music from a full world-class
orchestra, or you can pause at the 42nd Street subway station near the
red-line/S-line and hear equally amazing music from buskers. Just several feet away from the best luxury brands, there are sidewalk retailers selling crafts,
affordable fashion, and art.

Favorite hobby or special interest outside of work?

I have a couple of hobbies. I spend the summertime landscaping in Connecticut
and gardening in Maine. In the winter, I do renovation projects on a 200-year-old
Connecticut barn and creating art by knitting miles of wool yarn into spools. I’m
planning to do a show in the near future.

Top magazines, podcasts or newspapers?

I am a frequent reader of the New York Times and Financial Times (especially
the “How to Spend It In…” special section). I also have two magazines that I
love: Monocle magazine and Interior Design magazine.

Favorite aspect of working from home, hybrid or in the office?

I’m a big fan of working from the office, and not such a big fan of working
remotely (from home or anywhere else) for any creative activities. I love
collaborating with my team in person and sitting near young designers, even
when I’m doing focused work.

What is your biggest in-office pet peeve and pleasure?

My biggest pet peeve is the speed of the WiFi. My greatest in-office pleasure is
working at Gensler in a beautiful office, side-by-side with incredibly creative and
multi-disciplinary designers.

Favorite travel destination in the world?

I couldn’t pick a single one, so I have four travel destinations depending on the
mood. Top of the list is London (urban holiday), Rome (lifestyle holiday), Santorini
(chilling holiday) and St. Barts (seaside holiday).

If you could travel to any time and place in history, where and when would you choose
and why?

Florence on March 25, 1436 – the opening day of Brunelleschi’s Cúpula of Santa
María de las Flores.

What was your favorite subject in college?

Latin American Literature

Best piece of professional advice you have ever received?

In my third year of architecture school, my professor John McDermott, in the
middle of a typical design lecture, took a pause and gave us an incredibly
passionate speech about “purpose”. It was a tour de force moment I will never
forget. A teacher exercising his responsibility to mentor young minds on the
importance of always doing the right thing, no matter what. It had nothing to do with design, but it had everything to do with design. And life. And civic
responsibility. And professional ethics.

A fun fact about yourself?

I love to dance (and I’m good at it), and I love to sing (and I’m not good at it).

One goal you would like to accomplish with IIDA NY?

I would like to diversify the pipeline of designers entering our industry. I firmly
believe that design benefits from diverse perspectives, cultures, and lived
experiences. I think it’s imperative for the design industry to connect with young
students to introduce them to architecture and interior design as professional
pathways for them. Through mentorship programs and internship opportunities
that target underserved communities, we can cultivate interest in our industry,
empower minority students to pursue the profession, and create a rich pipeline of
diverse designers.

Where were you born, where do you currently reside, where did you graduate?

I grew up in Lexington, MA, while my home for the last 16 years has been Brooklyn. I went to undergrad at Rutgers University (in NJ) and grad school at Pratt Institute here in Brooklyn.

Why did you choose a profession in the interior design industry? 

I originally pursued a scientific career, however I always had a passion for creativity and I found myself gravitating towards interior design. It’s the perfect combination of creativity and technical knowledge.

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of? 

Being nominated as President-Elect of IIDA NY! It is so meaningful to be recognized as a leader in my professional community.

Where’s your favorite place for inspiration in New York? 

Any of the parks (especially Prospect Park). I love being around nature in a city that often seems to defy it.

Favorite hobby or special interest outside of work? 

I love cooking – not baking – but making up recipes with whatever I’m in the mood for that day.

Top magazines, podcasts or newspapers? 

I’ve been listening to linguistics podcasts recently. There is so much fascinating history to our language.

Favorite aspect of working from home, hybrid or in the office? 

I love being able to spend my commute time being productive, but it is so nice connecting with colleagues in-person in the office. This dichotomy is a conversation all of us are going to continue having into the future, with our families, colleagues and clients alike.

What is your biggest in-office pet peeve and pleasure? 

It’s great having a sit-stand desk in the office. I wish I had one at home. My pet peeve is that offices are always too cold! I hate having to bundle up in the summer as well as the winter.

Favorite travel destination in the world? 

This is challenging since part of the reason I enjoy traveling and seeing new places each time. However, I just returned from vacation in Italy and can’t wait to go back.

If you could travel to any time and place in history, where and when would you choose and why? 

The ancient world is intriguing to me. I’m so curious to know how those civilizations were able to engineer such long-standing iconic structures. 

What was your favorite subject in college? 

I loved taking Intro to Human Evolution, and learning some of the scientific origins of human behavior. Maybe that’s a sign of why I eventually chose a career in interior design.

Best piece of professional advice you have ever received? 

Don’t be afraid to fail. I have to keep reminding myself of this on a daily basis.

A fun fact about yourself?

I am obsessed with the NY Times Crossword. I do it every morning before work.

One goal you would like to accomplish with IIDA NY? 

I’d love to increase awareness of what participation in our professional organization offers. We have so many great programs but also a network of designers, industry members and students creating a true community of support.

Where were you born, where do you currently reside, where did you graduate?

I was born in São Paulo, Brazil and currently reside in Manhattan. I graduated from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) in 2008 with my Bachelors in Architecture and a Minor in Environmental Science and my Masters in Business Administration in 2011.

Why did you choose a profession in the interior design industry? 

Interior design is all around us. I wanted to leave my mark in the world through the creation of beautiful, inspiring spaces that can improve people’s lives. 

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

I have been fortunate to receive several awards for my work throughout the past 12 years. One of my personal professional accomplishments that I’m most proud of is my recent American Society of Interior Designers’ Ones to Watch for 2021. This was a national recognition for my body of work and impact within the interior design practice.  

Where’s your favorite place for inspiration in New York?

My favorite places are museums and galleries. We are very fortunate to have world renowned museums and galleries and consequently, are exposed to a great number of established and upcoming artists. From the composition of the works of art – both painted, sculptural, digital and multi-medium – to the sources of inspiration and color/material study, it quickly starts triggering new ideas which I love to explore through my professional work.

Favorite hobby or special interest outside of work?

As a very extroverted designer, outside of work, you’ll likely find me attending industry events, networking and socializing. I truly enjoy meeting new people and nurturing existing friendships. As for non-work related pastimes, I enjoy cooking and maintaining a healthy lifestyle – dancing, working out, running in Central Park, etc.

Favorite aspect of working from home, hybrid or in the office?

The flexibility of choice. This is a big take-away from this pandemic journey we’ve all been through. I truly enjoy having the option of a focused day at home or a collaborative day at the office. 

What is your biggest in-office pet peeve and pleasure? 

My biggest in-office pet peeve is excessive meetings or calls to discuss quick items that could have easily been an email. My pleasure is being surrounded by creative partners, our Resource Center for materials and overall inspiration as well as the infrastructure that we don’t have at home.

Favorite travel destination in the world? 

Many destinations are still to be explored, but a recent incredible trip was to Milan and Lake Como in Italy. The attention to detail in the architecture and fashion, the history and the culture/lifestyle was everywhere to be seen. 

If you could travel to any time and place in history, where and when would you choose and why?

I would like to travel to early 20th century Paris, during the Avant-Garde Art Movement that revolutionized European painting and sculpture, which were inspired by music, literature and architecture, to be in the company of Pablo Picasso and George Braque, the pioneers of the Cubism Movement. 

What was your favorite subject in college?

My favorite subject was environmental studies – linked to my minor in environmental science, which helped put forth the importance of sustainability in the built environment. 

Best piece of professional advice you have ever received?

The best piece of advice I have received was to “Never be afraid to be wrong.” Wrong is an experience with an unexpected outcome, a way to better ideas and a pathway to understanding, which ultimately leads to change and an opportunity to grow. 

A fun fact about yourself?

In my 22 years in the US, I’ve lived in 6 different cities – San Diego, Ann Arbor, San Francisco, Washington DC, Chicago and New York City.

One goal you would like to accomplish with IIDA NY?

To continue the dialogue about diversity and inclusion – in all senses of the word – and help move the needle in the corporate environment. We hold the responsibility to create spaces that are inclusive, inviting, and overall create a safe space for everyone to be their best self.

Where were you born, where do you currently reside, when will you graduate?

I was born and raised in Belize, but now Brooklyn, NY is my new home. I entered FIT for the Fall 2019 semester, and I am on course to graduate Spring 2023.

Why did you choose to study interior design? 

I have always loved the concept of architecture and design, in the context of leaving your mark, touching the lives of others and shaping the world around us. Currently, many people spend most of their lives indoors, so shaping what these spaces are by bringing my own touch and spice to others life is my inspiration.

Where’s your favorite place for inspiration in New York?

One of my favorite places for inspiration in NYC is The High Line. Walking through this public park during the summer time is like a breath of fresh air. It detaches from the city, but gives you a different perspective to appreciate Manhattan.  

Favorite hobby or special interest outside of school?

I recently picked up dog walking across the city. It has increased my love for man’s best friend, as well as giving me a tour of different parts of the city and lifestyles that I wouldn’t normally see during my normal routine.

Top magazines, podcasts or newspapers? 

I don’t listen to much podcasts, but one magazine I have begun to follow is Architectural Record. It is one of the first architectural publications that is opening the gate to architectural conversation for me.

Favorite aspect of the college experience?

The people! Both the professors and students really interest me. Listening to their stories and experiences has been one of the most helpful things in both boosting my career and my design thinking.

Favorite travel destination in the world? 

Anywhere with a beach or body of water to enjoy. I grew up in the tropics, and I’m used to having both a beach and freshwater lakes and rivers to enjoy. I’m a swimmer and need to swim no matter where I travel.

If you could travel to any time and place in history, where and when would you choose and why?

 If I could travel back in time I think I would only be interested in going back to the day I was born. Seeing what the world was like when I came into it compared to what I know of it now would be interesting to see, and inspiring to know that I was just that baby and how different I am to the person I am today. 

Best piece of academic advice you have ever received?

It’s okay not to know which direction you’re going, just expand your horizon and take every opportunity and give it your best. 

A fun fact about yourself?

I recently did glass blowing and worked with kilns/ ovens over 200 F0. 

One goal you would like to accomplish as a student member of IIDA NY?

I would like to get more exposure into different firms and to industry professionals that I normally would not have a connection to or be exposed to.

How do you feel that IIDA NY impacted your professional development?

I think so far it has assisted me greatly, by helping provide a necessary instrument that enables me to pursue my dreams.

What’s one thing you hope to accomplish after you graduate? 

After graduating from my current institution, I hope to get jobs and different positions for industry leading firms, to help expand my knowledge on how the industry operates. I eventually hope to create my own firm to create revolutionary, button pushing designs.

Biggest design or creative inspiration? 

At the moment, one of my biggest design inspirations is creating new ways of approaching dwellings and living spaces. Reconstructing what the typical home looks like and making green homes that work with the earth, not against it.

Where were you born, where do you currently reside, where did you graduate?

I was born on Long Island, NY and currently reside in the Financial District of Manhattan. I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts for Interior Design and a minor in Art History.

Why did you choose a profession in the interior design industry?

I originally thought of myself as becoming an architect but questioned if it would be too technically oriented for my interest. Before declaring my intended major for college, I had the opportunity to shadow a family friend at her architectural firm for the day. She had me help with a few activities, one of which was sourcing materials from the library for part of an interiors project. I got a flavor for what interior designers do and was instantly intrigued. I got home to do more research on what this profession entailed and thought it was the better fit for me. 

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

My dedication to ongoing professional advancement through education by obtaining my NCIDQ, LEED AP ID+C, and WELL AP appellations. If I had to pick just one, I’d say NCIDQ. I still can’t believe I had to show up to that exam with my own drafting board, T-Square, vellum – the works!

Where’s your favorite place for inspiration in New York?

The various “pop ups”. There is always somewhere new to go and when you get there, you’re always in awe of how much they were able to fit into a small space in such a short period of time. Some of my favorites have been the Color Factory, the Museum of Illusions and the Van Gogh Exhibit. And if going to these places isn’t enough of the inspiration, the trip there will never cease to amaze. I am constantly inspired by what I see just in the streets of New York with graffiti, sculptures, and parks.

Favorite hobby or special interest outside of work?

At the moment, I am a cycling fanatic; you can catch me on my Peloton nearly every day of the week. 

Top magazines, podcasts or newspapers?

I’m not going to lie to you – I am the worst at finishing anything I start to read and I’ve yet to get into the podcast phenomena. I’m much more of a music buff or documentary aficionado. Some of my recent watches have been “Down to Earth” and “Seaspiracy”. But I do still love perusing through my hard copy of Interior Design magazine (my only true subscription)!

Favorite aspect of working from home, hybrid or in the office?

I absolutely love having this hybrid approach to work. Working from home lets me get more sleep while still exercising in the morning, get my “heads-down” work done, and all while having my dog by my side all day. It makes the experiences in the office more memorable, truly cherishing time spent with colleagues. The office will always be my preferred location for collaboration and interaction. 

What is your biggest in-office pet peeve and pleasure?

Biggest pet peeve – invasion of space to my desk. I have major OCD and love everything neat and organized. Biggest pleasure – having a material library at my fingertips! Looking at materials online is never the same as in-person. And having the material library in my office, instead of my apartment, is greatly preferred.

Favorite travel destination in the world?

I’m lucky to have been to many wonderful places in the world. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but I’d have to say Ireland (probably not the answer you’d expect from a full-blown Italian!). But that could change – there’s still a lot of places on my bucket list.

If you could travel to any time and place in history, where and when would you choose and why?

I’m much more forward thinking than past thinking, so I’m going to break the rules here and flip this to where in the future I’d go: 2030 NYC. I look forward to seeing what sustainability initiatives will have been implemented, how interior design will have evolved and what AI will look like.

What was your favorite subject in college?

Almost all my classes revolved around interior design. Aside from interiors, my favorite was art history. My memory isn’t the best, but it’s much better when it comes to photography. And being in NYC for college, I loved seeing a photo in a text book and then being pleasantly surprised when I’d unexpectedly run into it in person and my memory would recognize it.

Best piece of professional advice you have ever received?

Don’t be afraid to go after what you want. If you work hard, your talents won’t go unnoticed.

A fun fact about yourself?

I have a black belt in karate.

One goal you would like to accomplish with IIDA NY?

I’m excited for the refreshed Sustainability Circle to be integrated into all of IIDA NY and grow the community through collaboration. With sustainability being such a prominent topic with so many interpretations, our committee is eager for any and all opportunities to get involved with the various IIDA NY committees and work together to make an impact. 

Where were you born, where do you currently reside, where did you graduate?

I was born in the Bronx, NY. My husband and I spent nine years living in San Francisco and returned to New York City in 2005. I graduated from Cornell University with a degree in interior design. 

Why did you choose a profession in the interior design industry?

I have always been creative. Arts and crafts were a big part of my childhood. My mother was always knitting or doing needlepoint. Color, texture, and pattern helped shape my aesthetic. Fast forward to my professional years—I am fortunate to have found a profession where I can use my creativity, analytical skills and problem solving ability to address clients’ biggest challenges. 

What professional accomplishment are you most proud of?

I’m proud of my focus on being a leader and mentor in this profession. I’ve learned so much from some really great mentors, and I feel a personal responsibility to pay it forward. What good is all of this knowledge if I don’t pass it along to others? I believe it’s my role to lift others up and help them succeed.

Where’s your favorite place for inspiration in New York?

The streets of NYC provide all kinds of inspiration. Look up – look down – look at the street art, the sidewalk, the concrete, the doors and the windows. NYC is a quilt of inspiration.

Favorite hobby or special interest outside of work?

I love to knit with hand-dyed yarn. I’ve become a yarn snob and love to purchase yarn from local makers in NYC, and will go out of my way to support local fiber artists whenever I travel.

Top magazines, podcasts or newspapers?

I’ve listened to a few podcasts and have enjoyed Studio Chats with Kelsey Paul and Design Matters with Debbie Millman. I’m more into non-fiction audio books and listen while I walk to work. I recently finished listening to Cultish, The Language of Fanaticism by Amanda Montell. It was fascinating to learn about how the strategic use of language can be used to manufacture community, a sense of belonging, and an us/them attitude.

Favorite aspect of working from home, hybrid or in the office?

I absolutely HATE working from home. I was very fortunate to have found a job three months after having been part of a giant pandemic layoff. I went into the office every day and got to know my colleagues. My favorite part of working from the office is the connections I forge with my colleagues at all levels. Remote work may be a valid option, but it does not replace the face-to-face human connections you get when you go into the workplace.

What is your biggest pet peeve and pleasure?

My pet peeve is also kind of a guilty pleasure. I see all of the typos, and I can’t help it. I save the worst/best ones, like a conference table shop drawing from over 10 years ago that called out “Satan Nickel”. Well, isn’t that special? 

Favorite travel destination in the world?

Anywhere. I did not grow up traveling. As an adult, I feel lucky to be able to take the time to visit other cities and learn about other cultures. I went to Spain before I had children. I would go back in a heartbeat. I would love to bring my sons with me and show them more of the world.

If you could travel to any time and place in history, where and when would you choose and why?

I think I would like to travel back to the ‘50s and ‘60s to experience the Eichler era in California. I have an interest in Eichler homes and really want to learn more about his work bringing modern design to the general public.

What was your favorite subject in college?

Design studio, of course. I loved researching the design briefs and coming up with well-thought out responses to design challenges. I also loved the community we built in the design studio.

Best piece of professional advice you have ever received?

There’s a lot. Know your value. Know your worth. Be true to yourself. Speak with conviction. Own your mistakes and learn from them. Apologize only when you’ve made a mistake. You don’t have to like everybody, or be liked by everybody. Be a mensch.

A fun fact about yourself?

I have a stool collection. It started with a plastic Tam Tam stool that I found at the Daly City flea market, followed by an Eames Walnut stool, a Vitra cork stool, and a Kartell Atilla Gnome stool. I quickly realized that once you have more than three of anything, it’s a collection.

One goal you would like to accomplish with IIDA NY?

I have been involved with IIDA for over 20 years, both in San Francisco and in New York. My ongoing goal is to help people understand the value of joining and building a professional network. I would not have been able to achieve what I have without the support of amazing colleagues and friends I met by attending events, meeting new people, serving on IIDA committees, and serving as a leader on the IIDA NY Board of Directors.

Q: What is your area of expertise?
A: I started in the design world with an internship for a hospitality design firm in Washington, D.C., and I loved every minute of it. It was my dream position, but then it was time to head home to present my thesis. I applied for a job at MidCity Office Furniture and thought I would use it as a stepping stone in my career. Almost 10 years later, I am still here, and now managing my own accounts, as well as three designers. I am right where I am supposed to be!

Q: How long have you been an IIDA NY member?
A: I am a founding member of the Buffalo City Center, so it has been five great years. I was originally approached by a group of local designers, who were interested in forming the Buffalo City Center. We got hard at work to get it off the ground. We didn’t have a large presence from an interior design organization in Western New York, and we wanted to fix that. I was actually responsible for the logistics of the first ever Buffcon. We never dreamed it would get as big as it is today!

Q: During the pandemic, with a pause on travel and social events, how have you maintained a connection to the IIDA NY community-at-large?
A: I have been attending the Collective Design Episodes that IIDA has been hosting, and they have been awesome. The panel discussions are extremely educational, especially since we are all dealing with these same issues.

Q: You are currently the IIDA NY Finance Chair. Can you talk a little bit about your role?
A: I am responsible for making sure the Buffalo City Center (BCC)’s finances are in check. I work with the event chairs to fill out budget worksheets for each event as well, making sure BCC members are receiving their checks for items they may have paid for. In terms of my goals, we are working towards creating member-only events in Buffalo, as we have never had something like that before. We want to make sure we recognize our members for their dedication to the BCC.

Q: You head one of the signature events – the Awards Gala. Can you talk us through what this event entails?
A: Our Awards Gala takes about a year of planning, with many members sitting on the committee. This event allows our local designers to submit their recently-completed projects, and to be recognized for their creative work. This is the one night of the year where we get to share projects with everyone in the Western New York design industry, with an amazing dinner and awards portion. We use the evening to celebrate our local designers and the field of interior design!

Q: Is there a specific IIDA NY event or program that has inspired you the most, or that you found the most beneficial to members?
A: Buffcon is by far the best event for our local designers, as they can see over 60 vendors within a four-hour period. The event is always well attended, and we are adding vendors every year.

Q: What projects are you currently working on?
A: I am working on projects across a variety of sectors: corporate, healthcare, and hospitality. We are just finishing up a project for a local headquarters that actually moved into the building I work in, that concentrates on alcohol and drug rehab. The space is really fun, but the layout and plan was carefully thought-out because of the business they are part of.

Q: What’s your favorite ‘design space’ in your local Buffalo area?
A: I have two favorites—the Buffalo Central Terminal, and the Richardson Complex. We actually host Buffcon at the Central Terminal and the Gala at the Richard Complex, so we are so lucky here in Buffalo!

Q: Biggest trend in interior design now?
A: Biophilia! We are seeing so many people wanting to incorporate more plants into their space. We love adding planters to create division within a space.

Q: What is a fun fact about you?
A: I have a knack for finding the lowest flights, as I love to travel! My friends and family come to me often to help them find the lowest prices, so they can travel more. Airlines apps are my go-to, as you can find great deals on the go!

Q: What is your area of expertise?
A: My focus is in commercial interiors, trending towards the TAMI (Tech/Advertising/Marketing/Information) arena. I got started working as an intern at a small residential firm when I was 14 years old, blueprinting old plans for 8 hours a day.

Q: How long have you been an IIDA NY member?
A: 10 years.

Q: How has being an IIDA NY member helped you professionally and personally?
A: Professionally, being President in 2011 prepared me for any of the challenges I face today as a director of an office. Personally, I have developed amazing friendships and a wonder circle of trusted colleagues. Q: What is your favorite IIDA NY event and why? A: Speed Mentoring because I love the development of our emerging leaders, and any way to assist them in getting a foot in our industry is an asset in my mind.

Q: Biggest trend in design right now?
A: Virtual reality, coworking, and “residential style” collaboration areas.

Q: What projects are you currently working on?
A: WeWork, Compass, Droga5, Yoox-Net A Porter, and Undertone.

Q: What’s your favorite ‘design space’ in New York?
A:It’s actually outside of NYC, upstate at the Dia:Beacon and Storm King Art Center. I could walk those spaces every weekend.

Q: Where do you go to find inspiration in New York?
A: I actually travel outside of NYC to get inspiration. We are licensed in all 50 states, giving us opportunities all over the U.S. It’s important to get an understanding of how design evolves outside of your “market bubble” to be able to truly approach it holistically.

Q: What is a fun fact about you?
A: I love working with electricity. I have wired my entire house, then found new things to rewire just for fun.

Q: What is your area of expertise?
A: With a Masters in Interior Architecture and Product Design, my approach really focuses on applying the creative problem solving process, starting with the human scale. The concept of physics in natural space fascinates me. The first thing I ever thought to do professionally was defy that very thing by creating video games with environments where you have complete control over everything. I realized a more challenging endeavor would be to attempt to make something just as spectacular while dealing with real-world conditions by creatively solving problems.

Q: How long have you been an IIDA NY member?
A: This is my third year of IIDA membership, but I was a member as a student as well.

Q: How has being an IIDA NY member helped you professionally and personally?
A:I think the networking aspect of being a member has already paid huge dividends. Beyond that, it allows me to be part of a dialogue that I wouldn’t have been otherwise, bringing me closer to some of our industry’s brightest minds, which personally I aim to be one day.

Q: What is your favorite IIDA NY event and why?
A: At first I thought Color Invasion because…come on, it’s Color Invasion. When I thought a little harder, I really enjoyed the DEX NYC Roundtable. I always seem to find catharsis in hearing how people with vastly different perspectives find design solutions in the most unique and beautiful ways.

Q: Biggest trend in design right now?
A:In general, I approach trends very cautiously. Trends are how the Kardashians happen. Right now, integrating and embedding technology seems to be all the rage. I don’t think this is bad, but it certainly carries a risk. Remember, technology is just another set of tools. Don’t let the tool use you.

Q: What projects are you currently working on right now?
A:I am currently engaged in a diverse array of projects ranging from airport interiors to film studios, with the usual helping of corporate interiors and a side of furniture design. Robert Frost said it best, “I’m not confused, just well mixed.”

Q: What’s your favorite ‘design space’ in New York?
A: I have always loved the Standard Hotel at the Highline. The way the architecture remains unique, yet still grounded in its context and the way it engages the High Line and brings people together. Not to mention, everything about it is the perfect amount of groovy. Q: Where do you go to find inspiration in New York? A: Everywhere! Being a small town kid from Kansas, what I love about New York is that there are an endless composition of micro-cultures, each bringing a new taste and flavor. One of my favorite spots though… Brooklyn Bridge Park, or Roberta’s pizza in Bushwick. Food speaks to me.

Q: What is a fun fact about you?
A:For about a year and a half now, I have been writing and performing my own music (guitar and vocals). It’s been an amazing experience to apply my creative side to something much less tangible. Words can be tricky, fascinating, empowering and heartbreaking, and to see others moved by something you create is beyond words. I also crochet.

Q: What is your area of expertise?
A: Graduating from Parsons, I was a fashion buyer for my first career – I loved, lived and breathed fashion. After being forced to take some time off for health reasons, I got introduced to Interior Design and met Environetics. The plan was to try it out for three months, but three months became a year, which turned into 17 years. Although I went back to school at night to be trained for interior design, my fashion principles give me a unique approach to projects and the design process.

Q: How long have you been an IIDA NY member?
A: For over 10 years.

Q: How has being an IIDA NY member helped you professionally and personally?
A: IIDA NY has provided me a community from which I can learn, grown and connect in. My job as a designer would be totally different without the IIDA NY community! Q: What is your favorite IIDA NY event and why? A: DEX NYC because it is an event that promotes the IIDA NY to the rest of the design community at large in New York City and connects the two.

Q: Biggest trend in design right now?
A: Concrete, reclaimed wood, and felt. Branded environments that identify a sense of self through the use and experience of a space.

Q: What projects are you currently working on?
A: Tommy Hilfiger, Doctors without Borders, and HarperCollins Canada.

Q: What is your favorite ‘design space’ in New York?
A: Grand Central.

Q: Where do you go to find inspiration in New York?
A: Central Park.

Q: What is a fun fact about you?
A: I used to be fashion buyer and I am an amateur opera singer. I take sunrise photos almost every morning – this is when I get ideas to solve many design problems. And I scuba dive! I find under the sea most fascinating for color inspirations.

Q: What is your area of expertise?
A: I’m a trained designer, however, I began my career in set design. One of the actors at the Weathervane Theatre worked at Gensler and recommended me for a position and the rest is history.

Q: How long have you been an IIDA NY member?
A: About 10 years.

Q: How has being an IIDA NY member helped you professionally and personally?
A: Bring an IIDA NY member has helped me become a better professional. The IIDA provides a forum where professionals can come together and exchange ideas in a non-competitive way. Every committee meeting leaves me refreshed and inspired.

Q: What is your favorite IIDA NY event and why?
A: The Pioneering Design series is always very exciting and the committee does a great job attracting great presenters.

Q: Biggest trend in design right now?
A: Trend is a tough word. What I have noticed is that clients are striving for a sense of authenticity in their spaces.

Q: What projects are you currently working on?
A: Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment, Macmillan, Sampo International, FCB, ABM, Wiley Publishing, and various large tech companies.

Q: What’s your favorite ‘design space’ in New York?
A: Central Park for landscape design and the Guggenheim.

Q: Where do you go to find inspiration in New York?
A: The streets of NYC are the best source of inspiration. The city is constantly evolving and adapting to its inhabitants needs.

Q: What is a fun fact about you?
A: I’m a set designer at heart. I’ve spent various summer vacations designing and building sets for the Weathervane Theatre. Knitting is also another passion.
